Chapter Eleven

It was only the second day and already dreams of grand magic and sophisticated spells were crushed. Boredom had manifested in all the usual forms, especially in the potions class. Heads lay on outstretched arms. Yawns rode a wave through the room. Leo was the only semi-energetic one of the lot, fooling around with a powder concoction at his station.

“What is that?” Cali asked.

“This is the absolute worst thing I could come up with to brighten our day,” Leo admitted. “One whiff and the nose of the sniffer will fall helpless to my power.”

Thomas straightened up. “Helpless?” He nabbed a pinch, blowing it in the direction of the entrances just as the professor walked in. “Uh-oh.”

Snailime’s nose twitched. He sniffled several times before using his sleeve for a tissue. The bright red tip of his nose and pale flush of his face gave away his condition.

“It’s sneezing powder!” Thomas exclaimed, awe shining through in the tone of his voice.

“Shh.” Leo used one finger to cover his lips. “If we are lucky, he’ll think he caught a cold.”

Snailime’s noses crinkled. “Allergies.” Only a moment ago he was perfectly fine. “It’s that time of year. It probably isn’t serious.” The desire for pity was reflected in his tone. He mixed a quick remedy, gulping it back before speaking again. “Ah! That should do it. Everything will be back to normal shortly.”

“He looks terrible,” Thomas said, leaning back to Leo’s station located directly behind his own. “It was just sneezing powder wasn’t it? We didn’t just infect him with the plague or something, right?”

Unfortunately, there was no nurse on site. She’d transferred out with the rest of the staff, leaving those attending to fend for themselves.

“It wasn’t finished,” Leo replied, chuckling under his breath. “I have no idea what it will do in this state.”

“Should we tell him?”

“Are you crazy?” Leo asked. “Do you want to take the blame for that?”

“Turn to page...” The professor’s eyes watered. “Ah-achoo.” He made no attempt to cover his mouth. Even his racing snails zipped away from the falling droplets of possibly infected spittle. “Two hundred and forty-five.” His mouth opened wide, taking in the air his nostrils refused to allow to pass. “We’ll be concentrating on making reversal potions. We all make mistakes, after all. It’s best to...” He inhaled several quick breaths. “...Ah-achoo.” He paused. “Where was I?”

“It’s best to,” Cali repeated from her notes.

“Oh, yes,” the professor said. “It’s best to know how to fix them. You won’t always have a teacher to run to for help.”

“Are you feeling okay, sir?” Thomas asked.

“Of course I’m not feeling okay,” Snailime snapped. “I’m bloody well sick, now aren’t I. That doesn’t change the fact I need to teach you lot how to reverse the effects of a potion.”

“Like an antidote,” Leo said without raising his hand.

“Ex-achoo.” Snailime wiped from his nose a string of mucus, much the same colour as one of his racing snails’ slime. “Exactly.”

“You could take the day off to recuperate.” Thomas
